What does biomagnification indicate?

Biomagnification refers to the process by which the concentration of toxic substances increases as they move up the food chain. This phenomenon occurs because predators accumulate these toxins in their bodies, often from the organisms they consume, which have themselves accumulated toxins from the environment or their food sources. As you progress through different trophic levels—from primary producers to primary consumers, and then to higher-level predators—the concentration of these toxins becomes significantly higher.

For instance, small fish may ingest pollutants present in the water, then larger fish that consume these smaller fish will have a much higher concentration of the same pollutants in their bodies.
